A BRIEF HISTORY
The Virginian is located in the Methow (Met-How) Valley. American Indians lived off the land along the rivers. The first white men were trappers in the 1800s. In 1883, gold brought permanent white settlers. Guy Waring, one of those settlers, built a home here in 1891.
Owen Wister, Waring's Harvard roommate, wrote "The Virginian", America’s first western novel. He developed the idea of honeymooning here. The Methow Valley is almost completely surrounded by national forest, state game range, and wilderness areas.
The North Cascades Highway was completed in 1972.
